Imperative Audio were invited to London’s TYX Studios at Tileyard to talk with TYX Managing Director, Jack Freegard. We talked about all things Tileyard and how they were getting on with their Imperative Audio Portable Vocal Booth.

The Benefits of the PVB for TYX

If you’re working in a space with less than desirable acoustics, the PVB can be a lifesaver. The PVB has allowed TYX to capture incredible-sounding vocals, guitar and horns in any of their studios. Roger Sanchez and Che Lingo have used the booth for their albums, as well as Ella Eyre and Toddla T. A lot of VO companies and podcasters have used the PVB to record at TYX.

It isn’t just for vocals though, horns, guitar cabinets and instruments that cause a lot of resonance in your room will greatly benefit from the up-front close sound the PVB provides.

Connecting to the Artist

When engineers are in a separate room from the performer there can be a loss of creative connection, and it is usually not ideal for them to be next to each other due to reflections off the desk and the walls. The PVB allows artists and engineers to work together in proximity without any of these issues. As it is modular, it is easy to take down and place in areas that wouldn’t normally be used for vocals.

Acoustics are Key

The importance of acoustic treatment cannot be overlooked when you’re looking to record a great sound. Even entry-level recording equipment can achieve stunning results in a well-controlled room. TYX recommends acquiring acoustic apparatus such as Acoustic Panels and the PVB.

The Specs of the PVB

With no less than 3 high performing layers of acoustic treatment, the Portable Vocal Booth offers an incredible 0.07 secs reflection time (RT60 in accordance with ISO 3382-2 Measurements) and an average of 28.4dba reduction (One-Third-Octave Spectrum LZeq in accordance with IEC 61260), for an open booth solution, this is simply unheard.

Standing at 210mm at its highest setting, the PVB easily accommodates even the tallest of performers. If you’d rather record from a seated position, simply adjust the PVB to suit your workplace and get comfortable. The acoustically treated roof is easy to add securely, featuring a 30cm channel to lower an overhead mic into the booth.
