Schoeps Super CMIT 2 U Digital Shotgun & Mini-DA42

Overview

The SuperCMIT defines a new type of shotgun microphone with directivity going far beyond that of conventional shotgun microphones, even those with long interference tubes. The SuperCMIT offers a completely new set of possibilities, whilst offering support for many present-day mobile recorders and mixing boards, it makes the SuperCMIT an ideal choice for any sound engineer.

The DSP in the SuperCMIT detects discrete sound from different directions and whether the sound has a discrete, permanent direction. The algorithm also detects diffuse sound from all directions and then uses this information to suppress the diffuse sound and to focus on the discrete sound. This allows the range of the microphone to be increased significantly, without the typical artifacts in sound colour. The SuperCMIT is the world's first microphone that combines high directivity with high sound quality.

The SuperCMIT 2 U features three buttons that enable/disable the microphone’s filters and presets. The two filters are identical to those of the analogue tube inside the CMIT 5U:

  • High-frequency emphasis (+5 dB at 10 kHz) compensates the attenuation of wind shields
  • The steep low-cut (18 dB/octave from 80 Hz) suppresses low-frequency wind and boom noises

While the unprocessed CMIT signal is always at the output on channel 2, channel 1 is the output of the SuperCMIT. There is a preset button that determines its directivity. Two positions:

  • Preset 1: Moderate increase of the directivity and attenuation of the diffuse sound by 11dB (5dB more than the SCHOEPS CMIT 5U or channel 2 of the SuperCMIT)
  • Preset 2: The attenuation of the diffuse sound is 15dB. This position is reserved for special applications - in some cases artifacts are possible.

The gain can be raised by +30dB by double clicking on all three buttons.

Best Practice

The SuperCMIT is a problem-solving microphone, especially where there is plenty of diffuse noise like street noise, wind noise, audience noise or room noise interfere. The direct sound is recorded without colourations whilst the noise is eliminated by simply being significantly reduced in level, down to the lowest frequencies. This is a feature that can’t be achieved even by a long shotgun microphone, making the SuperCMIT ideally suited for difficult film sound recordings or sports applications.

Mini-DA42

The Mini-DA42 serves for powering AES42 digital microphones (especially the SuperCMIT) and for converting their output signals to analogue. It allows to operate digital microphones with devices which only offer analogue or AES3 inputs.

Inputs:

  • AES42, Mode 1 (XLR-3F, 110 Ohms, black label)

Outputs (available through included Sub-D breakout cable):

  • AES3 (XLR-3M, 110 Ohms, blue label)
  • 2 × analogue (XLR-3M, yellow and red label), balanced, in relation to ground, maximum cable length: 300 m
