Electro-Voice RE20 Broadcast Dynamic Mic

The Broadcast Announcer's Microphone with Variable‑D

Electro-Voice's most iconic mic, the RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone is a true industry standard. A firm favourite for broadcasting, podcasting, voiceovers and sound engineering worldwide. Its popularity has also extended into music production as a premium-grade instrument microphone.

Since debuting in 1968, the RE20 has become the most-heard radio host’s microphone of all time, delivering a vocal tone that has become synonymous with the sound of modern FM radio personalities. With its smooth and linear characteristics on voice, the RE20’s reputation is that of a 'must-have' microphone for studios. Electro-Voice’s exclusive Variable-D technology is central to the RE20's popularity, minimising proximity effect tonal shifts and allowing the host to move freely without ever sounding off-mic.

Main Features

Its Variable-D dual-port technology eliminates the proximity effect where low frequencies rise when used close to the mouth. It features an integral blast and wind filter allowing singers to almost touch the grille screen without causing popping or excessive sibilance. The Acoustalloy diaphragm provides a uniform response between 45Hz and 18kHz. The Variable-D design and heavy-duty internal pop filter excel for close-in voice work, while an internal element shock-mount reduces vibration-induced noise.

Ideal for tight vocals and challenging instruments, the RE20 can be used inside bass drums, and on acoustic guitars, and is found in most voice booths and broadcast studios. Its massive steel housing and hum-bucking coil ensure resistance to magnetically induced hum and noise, this allows the RE20 to be used successfully in situations where other microphones would experience unacceptable levels of hum and buzz. It easily handles high-humidity and elevated temperatures that would deteriorate competitive condenser microphones.

By exploiting the strength of its steel housing and employing a mechanical nesting concept, EV's designers have created an exceptionally rugged microphone, with superior handling noise rejection ideally suited for professional uses.
