I play in a band that can't remember from one week to another what was rehearsed. So, I purchased the Zoom H1 recorder to record our rehearsals for reference. Previously, I tried using an old mini disc recorder and boundary mic, however the results were disappointing, in that the MD recording was boomy, and distorted. The H1 is a far superior method. The quality of this little unit is amazing for the price. My rehearsal recordings almost sound like studio recordings, it seems to pick out all the instruments and vocals very clearly, and disregards the boomy empty concert room acoustics.where we practice. We rehearse' in the round' so that we have contact with each musician, and I placed the H1 10 feet behind the drums, out of the circle, on a small tri-pod and pointing upwards about 45 degrees. The only slight concern is that, in Auto vol. rec. mode, the mic cannot act quick enough to bring the level down, so there is a loud distorted sound when launching into a song, it takes, probably 1 second or so to bring the level down, also in the middle of a song, if there is a 'spike' from the drums say,it may suddenly drop the recording level again. This has only happened on 2 tracks out of about 8 that I have recorded, but none the less, it does occur. I have yet to try positioning the mic in another part of the room, which may be the cause of the previous occuurence, so can't say categorically that this is an inherent fault. Another slight disappointment is, you are not able to add track markers when in MP3 rec. mode, therefore if you leave it running for a while, you have to trawl through everything you have recorded to find the 'good' bits. This item is made of a brittle plastic, and does not come with a padded bag, so I recommend that the 1st thing you do is make a padded bag, or wrap it in bubble wrap for transprtation. I don't think it would survive a drop from more than 2-3 feet onto a hard surface, and I hope that I don't get the chance to prove this theory. All in all, it is very very easy to use, it has a large red record button on the top, and it has a fantastic amount of potential recording time ( up to around 500 hrs with a 32 micro card )and is ideal for my requirements. I am going to record the band doing a live gig and check out the results, but I am sure it won't disappoint.

my favourite gadget-does the job and very easy to use. even has a wee speaker built in,vhandy to check when you are deleting files. ez to share and store files esp when set to mp3,so good for rehearsals no setting up files and mic levels just one button and easy to get a mate to use too. so good for song ideas just two buttons to press and you are recording while the ideas fresh. this new model has mic/usb facility and im very happy with the quality of sound a no brainer for recording anything from rehearsals, meetings background noise for all your recording needs and just fits in your top=pocket.
