The ProductThe TritonAudio D2O 500 is a low noise discrete microphone preamp inspired by the famous German V series preamps of the 40's and 50's, built in a single slot 500 series form factor.
Just like the D2O, the D2O 500's general layout consists of a Lundahl 1571 input transformer followed by 2 single ended gain stages. The second gain stage can be selected to be either a high gain FET or a tube stage by depressing the front panel switch. When the high gain, all FET circuit is engaged, the D2O becomes an ideal companion for microphones with a relatively low output like ribbon microphones. With the hybrid FET/tube circuit engaged the sonic benefits of having a tube in the signal path can be realised. To extend the tube's lifespan, the tube circuit is completely powered down when not in use. Output drive is supplied by a discrete low impedance FET buffer with superb sonic properties. Quality paper-in-oil coupling capacitors are used, with all other components also being of the highest possible quality
In single ended preamplifier designs the quality of the power supply is crucial, consequently D2O is fitted with a discrete low ESR voltage regulator built with low noise components enabling optimal performance to the amplifier circuit.
Another front panel switch enables the user to select the transformer ratio between a 1:1.75 (LO) or 1:3.5 (HI) setting. Besides setting voltage gain, this also switches the input impedance of the amplifier between 2.25K and 6.25K . Different transformation rate and impedance selection options are very desirable as they allow for more sonic options from the microphone connected.
Other front panel controls include a stepped rotary attenuator, phase reverse switch and phantom power on/off switch. The rear panel presents a balanced microphone input on a 3-pole female XLR connector as well as a balanced output on both 3-pole XLR and " jack socket.
The TritonAudio D2O 500 is also available in a stand alone desktop housing called the D2O.
