What is an Equaliser?

An equalizer, often abbreviated as EQ, is an audio device used to adjust the balance of different frequencies within a sound signal. It allows users to boost or attenuate specific frequency bands, enabling them to tailor the tone of audio recordings or live sound reinforcement to their preferences. Equalizers are commonly used in music production, mixing, mastering, live sound engineering, and audio playback systems to achieve desired tonal balance, correct room acoustics, eliminate frequency masking, and enhance overall audio quality. There are various types of equalizers, including graphic EQs, parametric EQs, shelving EQs, and notch filters, each offering different control over frequency bands and slopes.
