Behringer Multicom Pro-XL MDX4600 4 Channel Compressor

The reference-class MDX4600 is a marvelous 4-channel Expander/Gate/ Compressor/Peak Limiter that is ideal for: compressing mono/stereo signals and providing virtually inaudible noise suppression, without loss of high frequencies; increasing vocal presence and energy; and limiting, or smoothing out extremely-high signal peaks. Additionally, the MDX4600 features an integrated Dynamic Enhancer, De-Esser, and Low-Contour filter to provide the ultimate in signal enrichment. Put simply, the MDX4600 can do amazing things for your vocals or instruments – providing virtually everything you need for studio-quality dynamics processing!

  • IRC (Interactive Ratio Control) expander/gate circuitry for virtually inaudible noise suppression
  • Switchable dynamic Enhancer for brilliant, lively audio even with heavy compression
  • IGC (Interactive Gain Control) peak limiting circuitry combines clipper and program limiter for reliable and inaudible protection against signal peaks

  • Stereo couple function selectable for channels 1/2 and 3/4

  • Selectable operating level (+4 dBu/-10 dBV)

This is a great unit, when it works.. I have used several of these units, and when they work, they are great. Unfortunately, out of four channels, 2 out of the four channels are dead (after a couple of years use) the other box however is fine. So.. A good box, great price, but if it's your only box, caveat emptor. Don't let this put you off though, if price is a real issue

Our sound engineer said we needed a 4 channel compressor and this is what we got him. Why Behringer? Because we also use their feedback destroyers and graphic equalisers and have always been happy with them, that's why. Our guy has been happy as anything since we got this item so I guess on that basis it does what it says on the can. I'm always on stage when we use it so my experience of the thing is somewhat limited. However, what I can tell you is that we get endless comments from audiences telling us how good we sound these days so it's got to be playing its part in that process. Downside? Possibly the manual. For a non-techie, like so many other manuals, it was all over my head (but hey, I'm the crotchets and quavers piano man) although our guy seemed happy enough with it!
