BEHRINGER 4 CHAN MULTICOM PRO XL MDX 4600 The new Multicom packs a lot of processing power into 1U of rack space. Much of the manufacturing cost is in metal work and power supplies. The cost of additional channels is minimal so such units provide good value for money. All channels are identical. The Multicom unusually features both the famous soft/hard knee compression techniques. The soft knee curve is musically more acceptable and easier to set. Hard knee is more predictable and defines the parameters so is favoured by many. Programme dependent Attack and Release times provide for easy setting up. Controls are provided for Ratio, Threshold and Output level. An eight point LED ladder provides the appropriate gain reduction information. The Interactive Auto Compressor provides inaudible compression. Connected in line with the power amplifier the limiter saves on blown speaker cones. Inputs and outputs balanced/unbalanced on Jacks and XLRs. Channels are linkable.

  • 4-channel compressor limiter
  • High-pass filter in the sidechain
  • Integrated dynamic enhancer
  • Low-contour filter
  • Interactive auto-compressor
  • Program-adaptive attack and release times
  • Link function for channel pairs
  • Separate displays for in/out level and gain
  • Peak limiter
  • Illuminated switches
  • Servo-balanced XLR and 1/4" I/O

This is a great unit, when it works.. I have used several of these units, and when they work, they are great. Unfortunately, out of four channels, 2 out of the four channels are dead (after a couple of years use) the other box however is fine. So.. A good box, great price, but if it's your only box, caveat emptor. Don't let this put you off though, if price is a real issue

Our sound engineer said we needed a 4 channel compressor and this is what we got him. Why Behringer? Because we also use their feedback destroyers and graphic equalisers and have always been happy with them, that's why. Our guy has been happy as anything since we got this item so I guess on that basis it does what it says on the can. I'm always on stage when we use it so my experience of the thing is somewhat limited. However, what I can tell you is that we get endless comments from audiences telling us how good we sound these days so it's got to be playing its part in that process. Downside? Possibly the manual. For a non-techie, like so many other manuals, it was all over my head (but hey, I'm the crotchets and quavers piano man) although our guy seemed happy enough with it!
