Behringer FCA610 Audio Interface

The ideal way to stream audio to and from your PC or Macintosh computer, the Behringer FCA610 will instantly turn your computer into a powerful recording and editing workstation. With 10 input channels and 6 outputs, as well as 2 MIDAS designed mic preamps with phantom power, individual Pad, Low Cut and Hi-Z and ADA8000 ADAT connectivity, the FCA610 is ideal for more permanent applications, such as home and professional recording studios, as well as live performance multi-track recording rigs. With its small size and low-latency operation, it also ranks among the best devices for travelling musicians who record and edit on their laptops.

All standard I/O formats are supported including analog, S/PDIF (coaxial and optical), ADAT and S/MUX, while built-in MIDI I/O allows you to connect keyboards and other outboard MIDI hardware. A dedicated power supply is included. FireWire and USB 2.0 ports are situated on the rear panels of the FCA610 . Inputs are balanced 1/4" jacks that accept a wide range of line-level devices. Outputs accept both balanced and unbalanced 1/4" connections. The two headphones jacks are conveniently located on the front panel, with a dedicated volume control.

This audio interface was bought to replace my MOTU 828 because I wanted something more compact and portable and that worked via USB with a recent iMac. Budget was also a consideration. Sound quality is excellent for a product of this price. The only time I needed to refer to the instruction book was to figure out how to switch it from Firewire to USB mode (it was shipped set to Firewire). One minor criticism: if you want to switch it off and use your computer's onboard sound output (eg if you do not want to bother with your external monitors) there is no power switch, so you have to unplug it; also external power supplies are always a bit of a pain. If you are a Sibelius user, there seem to be some issues with Sibelius and Mavericks which cause the computer to drop the USB connection to the FCA610, which is a nuisance that I hope will be resolved shortly, as it means the MIDI connection to my keyboard is broken. However, it works well with Logic Pro X and it has been very easy to make good quality home recordings of classical pieces with a single mic or stereo pair. Two headphone sockets with independent volume controls is a useful bonus when working with someone else. All in all, a neat little unit which gives you a lot for your money. Too early to comment on durability, but it seems well put together.
