The Alesis IO Dock II picks up the baton from its highly innovative predecessor, and delivers a unit that is even more flexible and convenient. Got those unaware of the original model, the IO Dock is a combined audio and MIDI interface, and iPad dock, in a single unit that provides everything you need to produce music on an iPad. Very neat, eh
The new IO Dock II addresses one unavoidable drawback of its predecessor immediately, but manages to do so in a way that shouldn't cause issues with older iPads. Apple recently switched the older 30-pin connecter on its devices to a new, small, lightning connector. This meant that the original I/O dock would only fit older iPads.
On the new version, Alesis has very conveniently included two converter cables (one for 30-pin, one for lightning connector) so that both older and newer models can be connected.
The interface provides two input, two output connectivity. The two inputs are via XLR combo jacks. These can be either mic inputs (with phantom power) or line inputs, with input 1 able to be switched to a high impedance guitar input. The guitar preamp has been subject to some fine-tuning since the original device, with improved accuracy and sonic performance. Each input has its own level control.
The two outputs are via balanced, - jacks, ensuring that reproduction is free from unwanted noise and interference (when used in conjunction with speakers with balanced inputs). To the side of the unit, a MIDI input and MIDI output socket are located, along with a USB MIDI socket.
A footswitch input also features to the rear, with a headphone jack (with separate level control) and master volume to the right of the unit. The device is compatible with iPad, iPad2, and 3rd and 4th generation iPads, thanks to the re-located connector and interchangeable cables. It's also compatible with Core Audio and Core MIDI apps, making it compatible with virtually all iOS music apps, equipping it well to be the hub of your iPad music making.
The Alesis IO Dock II is a worthy successor to the original, improving the compatibility, providing better future-proofing, and improving recording quality, too, whilst maintaining the many strengths of the original. Features:
- Recording interface for iPad
Compatible with 30-pin and lightning connectors (interchangeable connectors included)
2 x XLR combo jacks inputs, switch-able between line and mic inputs
High impedance switch on input one
MIDI I/O and footswitch input
