Studiospares S1940 Retro Mic. Cardioid.

Recreating the sounds of the 40s and 50s starts at the microphone.

Manufactured from a zinc die casting which houses a large dynamic capsule heavily protected from pop and blast by the slots which break up blasts whilst an internal red foam windshield filters out the rest.

To be really authentic there is a slight presence peak which provides greater intelligibility and clarity. The On - Off switch is silent and will not "pop the monitors" when activated. The S1940 is capable of withstanding the rigours of the stage and the road. It looks and sounds great just like the 1940s and quickly becomes part of the act.

Features:

* Classic design dynamic microphone

* High quality Zinc-die casting housing

* Cardioid pickup pattern to reduce feedback during live applications

* Transparent tailored audio with presence peak for distinct live- sounding vocals

* Pop-free locking on- off switch

Specification:

  • Frequency Range 40Hz - 15kHz
  • Sensitivity -52dB +/- 2dB (0dB=1V/Pa @1000Hz)
  • Equivalent Noise level less than 18dB (A weighted)
  • Output Impedance less than 300 ohm

    I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised with this mike. I play tenor saxophone and also do the occasional vocals in a 30's/40's/ 50's jazz swing R&B band and we gig quiet a lot in very different venues. The S1940 replaces the Asian Shure 55 copy I used to sing through (just for the looks) that unfortunatly went south slowly. And it SHURE sounds very nice. For my sax I usually have a Sennheiser 421 mkII on stage when we bring our own sound. The Sennheiser is a class of its own. However this S1940 handles the huge sax sounds just as well in a great way! Nice warm yet clear and well defined tone. Fantastic on the huge clean low end also. The Sennheiser may be a bit more refined, read balanced or natural when compared while recording but it won't make me sell the S1940. The S1940 has a little different sound flavour and is little fuller and rounder maybe due to the mids boost as described but the sound quality is in the same league. I dare to declare this because I recorded them side by side. When I am limited to only one mike on stage for sax and vocals the S1940 is it. And ofcourse it is a great looker too. I love these huge mikes. One gripe is that there are no technical specifications like frequency response and impendance ratings so you are not able to compare with other microphones. My other gripe is that the on/off switch is faulty (out of the box) as it buzzes when switch off. So I just leave it on. So when you like to try a retro looking mike for your saxophone you should give this one a try. You might be pleasantly surprised too.

    great looking mic and it sounds great. its a heavy microphone but it is well built. we tested it at a gig up against a shure 55 1950`s style microphone and in my opinion it was better sound quality

    I'm using this for backing vocals live with Kai's Cats. A vintage/ retro jive band. Does the job and looks good with our Red & black lZoot Suits.
