Studiospares S975 Condenser Microphone

Back-electret capsule. Comes with an XLR adapter to allow use with mixers and pre-amps that supply full +48V phantom power.

The pre-polarised electret capsule has a tiny diaphragm so is able to capture the harmonics associated with percussion instruments. The upper frequency limit is beyond the range of audio measuring equipment. The microphone has little response from other local instruments due to the tight pickup pattern.

The S975 simply clips onto the body, bell or rim etc of any instrument. The gooseneck allows precise placement of the capsule. Living next to a snare drum or being clipped to the bell of a saxophone makes great demands on the overload factor. Thankfully the SPL is 130dB, no problem.

    I play the sax (jazz, tenor mainly) and do some home recording, usually using a Roland Quad Capture and a Shure SM57 mic. I want to find a mic that gives good sound quality when I close mic the sax for ballads, so that I get a very intimate sound with Ben Webster like breathiness. I was hoping this mic would do that. I am a fan of Studiospares, especially for giving good value for money, and it may be that I had too high expectations of this mic (it's pretty cheap after all), but it doesn't do what I was after. The resulting recordings with the S975 achieve what I am after less well than the SM57 on a mic stand about 2 feet away from the sax bell. I know the SM57 is quite a bit more expensive than the S975, but I had hoped the S975 being mounted on the bell of the sax would give the really close mic'd quality - it doesn't. The recording quality isn't bad per se, it just doesn't have the charcteristics I'm after for my type of music. This mic would probably work ok for upbeat rock and pop music providing you aren't leaping around too much as it only attaches with a single clothes peg type clip. The clip is well made and the surfaces are rubber coated to increase friction, but it would still be easy to pull off if you get athletic and catch the cable. The mic cable has a mini XLR connector, but an adaptor to a full size XLR connector is included in the box, as is a foam windshield. Given the price, that's pretty good. Would I recommend the product? Yes, if your needs aren't affected by the above limitations, then this is not bad value for money.

    Great sounding Mic although picks up valve travel on my Yamaha Xeno Trumpet. Maybe thicker insulation on the clamp would rectify this. Excellent value.

    I tried this at a Brasilian carnival stage show on a repique (imagine an aluminium tomtom beaten with a stick and slapped with the hand.)Later I tried it on a pandeiro (tamborine on steroids). Sonicly, it is warm with sheadloads of bass - not what you expect from a small condenser. Although the repinique is both loud and shrill the mic showed no sign of giving up. Phisically, it is light as a feather - perfect for a hand held drum, but rather flimsy. The attached lead is thin for a mobile drum. I gaffered the whole lot to the drum and used a proper mic lead. The gooseneck secures to the clip via a pivot, but under shock movement (Like a strap-mounted drum beaten with a stick) it can droop. I'm considering gluing it fixed. Its a mic worth continuing with.

    This mic is a great solution for percussion, horns and woodwinds. On drums it is too sensitive and needs a pad because its signal is too hot. Other than tht it is recommended as it is versatile and can be clipped to almost any instrument.
