Studiospares S990 Cardioid Mic

A cardioid multi-application microphone that is equally at home with an orchestra, a band or a vocalist. The back electret capsule provides an uncompromising sound through the response being held within very tight limits through the 18Hz - 21kHz range. The transient response is excellent mainly due to the 22mm diameter capsule which easily captures the zing of hi hats or the thud of a bass drum. Unusually the S990 includes a pad with three sensitivity options, 0, -10dB and -20dB. Maximum SPL is 142dB @ 1kHz. Sensitivity is -40dB ref 1 volt/pascal. Additionally a switched high pass filter cuts in below 80Hz at 12dB/octave to filter out unwanted high energy low frequencies. Powering is via the internal 9V PP3 battery or 24 - 48 volt phantom powering. This S990 is very versatile and represents astonishing value for money and would be difficult to fault whatever the application. Supplied complete with a microphone clip, pouch, battery, foam windshield and a thread adaptor.

Good TV reporter mic. Excellent hand noise isolation. Impressive performance in noisy environments - able to cleanly pick out speech from 10-12 inches away in a banging night club. Overall excellent value for money.

This mic is way better than the one it's a copy of, the build quality is superb, an it has some real weight to it. I use it for studio recording through Apogee converters, (but would have no qualms about using it for live stuff either) and so far i haven't found anything that it doesn't sound brilliant on. It is surprisingly, a more than decent vocal as well as instrument mic. Overall it's a bit of a hidden gem & i'm seriously considering buying another, nice one studiospares.

No light weight in both senses. Performs well, natural sound, sensitive, looks the business. Can't fault it so far.Supplied stand clip not so good, but hey, that's not what I bought it for.I freelance sound systems to support volunteer group activities and this will be one of the first mikes I pull out of the bag, very versatile.
