Studiospares S955 Condenser Microphone

The Studiospares S955 microphone is an impressive alternative to more expensive handheld condenser microphones. The full range frequency response enables this microphone to be faithful to many instruments and voices.

Fabulous microphone. I've had mine for a number of years and it's ideal for live work, especially if your vocalist also plays an instrument. great response and clarity, and it's built really well (I've dropped mine a number of times!). if you're undecided - go for it.

First a word of warning - they may have changed the wording on the site by now, but in my catalogue and on the website it said that this runs off a 1.5v battery - it doesn't. It is only powered by phantom power fed through the XLR lead. For my purposes however that is fine. I'm not an expert, but I got a very clear sound doing some basic tests in my home studio - just vocal and acoustic guitar. I mainly record acoustic instruments - mandolin, ukulele, guitar, etc, and vocals so was looking for something that would give good clear results and also provide some decent seperation when recording as an ensemble. I did a side by side comparison between this and a dynamic mic, recording the same source and the quality of the S955 is definitely much clearer and brighter - which is to be expected. I also did the same test against a Behringer C1 (which I tend to use for acoustic guitar as it has a bright sound compared to the really warm sound of my other large capacitor mic - MXL 2001 - as you can probably tell, I'm very much a man on a budget) - again the sound was clearer and thanks to the hyper cardioid pattern it also picked up less backround noise - in my opinion for a small home studio recording setup this might be a better bet than a cheap large capacitor mic - particularly if you have small amounts of ambient noise - e.g. PC fan, central heating etc that are more likely to be picked up by a large capacitor in a small studio. I've only had it a few days, but it looks pretty robust - good weight and feels and looks like a dynamic mic. If you unscrew the pop shield though you'll see its a condenser capsule inside. Great value compared to other small capsule condensers.

I am a singer/songwriter. I happen to buy this mic by chance while I was at Studio Spares buying a mixer. This mic blew me away , the frequency responce is ultra wide . Superb hot signal and a crystal clear full bodied sound. The dail on my amp is just over quarter. I would put this mic up there with the Shure beta 87a infact the S955 has a hotter output.

I have Shure and Sennheiser mics, wired and wireless. Been waiting for this since early in the New Year. Absolutely fantastic performance. Just hope that it is reliable as I've had cheapy condenser mics before that have failed. Buy with confidence.

Been waiting for this mic. since early in the New Year. NOT disappointed, more astounded. Comparing with Sennheisers and Shures, this "cheapy" condenser mic is fantastic. Buy with confidence. Just hope that it doesn't fail; I have had some that have.

What a surprise, bought a couple of these as backups to SM58's, but could't believe the quality output. High output, full bodied, low noise, extreme value for money, grab a sack full.
