Sontronics Orpheus Condenser Microphone

The highly sensitive 1.07" dual-diaphragm capsule is suspended in its own special mount, almost floating in the large, spherical basket. The body is cast from Zinc alloy, which gives almost zero resonance and helps to keep the signal crystal-clear. Omni, Cardioid & Figure 8 patterns, and a 10dB cut/boost function, make this microphone the perfect `workhorse` in practically any studio or live sound application. Its low self-noise and unmistakable presence allows you to record the subtlest of instruments or voices. Supplied in a luxury wooden case, ORPHEUS is a combination of the past and the present, but more importantly it is unique. The XLR cable enters from the rear casing, allowing the cable to follow its natural route along the boom and therefore reduces strain on the cable, connector and socket. As the capsule is isolated in its own suspension, the ORPHEUS uses a direct mounting clamp, rather than the usual bulky shockmount

Pro Sound Network, 2010 "The Sontronics Orpheus offers beauty, build quality, performance, and value to either budget-conscious professionals with a need to expand their LDC palette or serious self-recordists with mic money to spend. The Orpheus is a flexible multi-pattern LDC that can visually woo those you record (yet not sonically disappoint). This microphone worked really well with my voice. I highly approve of this microphone. I would say that Sontronics could consider giving these things a less hideous design. However, while the microphone is vile to the eye it is like audible honey, very sweet.

I'm really trying hard to find some negatives to say about these mics to give a balanced review but I'm finding it really difficult so I'm afraid It's gonna have to be all positive! I managed to get hold of two of these to try as I was ready to upgrade my drum overheads from a pair of Rode NT2-A's. After the 1st an A/B test I was blown away. The contrast in quality was stunning; the Orpheus gives a clarity and balance to the kit that I've previously not experienced and the next day I purchased two of these great mics and I have to say it's one of the best moves I've made in many years. Obviously these two mics are in different price brackets but the step up in quality is worth every penny. The look of the mic is stunning and I particularly love the placement of the XLR port. It makes running a cable to the mic effortless and means zero strain on the cable or mic. This type of attention to detail shows the amount of thought that goes in to every aspect. I can't recommend these mics anymore!
