Neumann U87 Condenser Microphone

The Neumann U87 Ai condenser microphone is undoubtedly one of the most famous and widely used studio microphones in the world, through its 50 years of use it’s become nothing less than the gold standard for audio capture in the recording studio.

After being introduced way back in 1967, the U87 has gone on to shape the sound of countless hit records in that time and become the go-to tool used by radio DJs to announce those hits. It’s iconic smooth, and refined sound capture with its elegant design make this microphone the undeniable choice for quality audio capture and the symbol of vocal recording. No recording studio is complete without a U87.

Features:

The Neumann U87 is one of the most versatile microphones and will be like a swiss army knife and the go-to choice for any recording application. Providing enough features for you to capture any source position and tone-wise.

This microphone features 3x polar patterns to accommodate any recording situation you find yourself, cardioid for vocal recordings, figure 8 for recording sources in front and behind the capsule, like interviews for example and Omni-directional for recording from all directions, like a choir for instance.

The mic also features a -10dB attenuator switch, to tame any high SPLs from the source you are recording, so you can capture everything with pristine clarity without distortion being present on your recordings. With this attenuator, the U87 can handle SPLs up to 127dB distortion-free.

Another feature U87 has is a low-frequency roll-off attenuator switch, perfect for when you need to remove those low frequencies that aren’t part of what’s required to be recorded, like mic stand rumble or microphone bumps for example.

Unrelenting quality

The Neumann U87 is the epitome of quality in both build and sound characteristics. Being handmade in Germany and featuring only the highest quality of components, there’s no reason why any U87 that comes out of the Neumann factory won’t be one of the most excellent sounding microphones in the world.

What can be expected from the U87 Ai, is what it has become famous for and that’s it’s pristine clarity and authenticity.

The U87’s natural sound and unique mid-range make this the perfect vocal microphone. And with its balanced response in every one of its 3x polar patterns, it has exceptional versatility qualities that mean you can use it on anything from acoustic guitar to drum overheads to orchestras. The challenge would be finding something this microphone wouldn’t excel in capturing.

The Neumann U87 Ai is the definition of quality sound capture and will serve well over a lifetime of use. There is a reason why this microphone is the most popular studio microphone the world over.

This microphone really is a different kind of animal. While I cannot promise it will be the perfect microphone for every voice, the people that shine with a U87 will be taken to the next level. This microphone does more than vocals, but really isn't quite the same work horse microphone that you can expect from a C414. I didn't own the U87 that I used, but I had plenty of opportunities to use it and did so.

If, like me, you've struggled for years to get a good vocal sound with cheaper microphones, it was lovely to be able to plug this in say "oh, good, it wasn't me, it was the mic".
