Studiospares RED100 Microphone Reflection Filter

The Studiospares RED 100 provides a realistic answer to the problems of unwanted sound entering via the rear of the microphone. The heart of the answer lies in the construction of the shielding material. Sound isolation rooms use the principle that sound waves agitate a material (the walls) and dissipate that energy into an acoustically absorbant material similar to Rockwool.

RED 100 applies that principle by surrounding much of the microphone with a wall. In the case of RED 100 the wall consists of a complex sandwich construction of five differing materials. The results are astonishing, providing better detail and a more accurate sound. To save storage space and provide more control over the captured sound the sides can be folded in and out. The RED 100 is designed to be mounted on a 5/8" thread. Round base stands are likely to topple forward. The position of the microphone relative to the filter can be varied back and forth.

Mine has been sat in my studio for years now. The built quality is not great, and unless it's opened out on a specific setting, the stand for the mic will not rest directly in the middle. However, I do use it at that setting all the time and it's fine. I don't cart it around often, it just sits in my studio doing it's job well.

I needed something to aid th process of recording voice-overs... This seemed to fit the bill. Functionally, it has good reviews but I noticed the enthusiasm for tailed off when evaluating its build quality. It assembles fairly well, the ability for it to fold makes it easier to store while it is not in use. Once on the Mic stand, it seems stable enough just so long as one of the stand supports are aligned in the same direction as the Mic. I have to confess I have yet to use the beast (that will happen ion the next day or so) but the reviews here show promise :-) On the down side, the bits an bobs that are supplied with it are eminently losable so some kind of receptacle for them on the rear of the device would be a great improvement. It was also fiddly to assemble - a fact made a little more awkward by a nagging suspicion that bits were missing from the delivered product. Regarding the build quality, I would echo the somewhat negative reviews here.. The telescopic mic attachments are poorly made with clamps that don't clamp very well and press-fit components that have not been well assembled. Not sure how to answer the "would I recommend" bit... The answer is "Yes - but" :-)

I reckon this is a bargain. When these acoustic filters first came around I was a bit sceptical but I must say they have produced some really noticeable results. We've tried them on vocals and acoustic instruments and in both cases they reduce spill and unwanted reflections and you end up with a tighter, more focused sound. At this price it's well worth having a couple around.

The RED 100 worked out great as it cut out a lot of the ambient sound and gave a clear path for the guide vocal without too much over-spill from the near field monitor mix.

This product gets an average rating sorry! not on performance but to do with the product assembly. OK It's a chunky monkey, but on opening the acoustic panels were unstuck down the centre spine and from the felt backing and along the bottom edges, also the bright work chrome surround has the fine rust pits coming through already. This could just be a rouge one but, unless this does not bother you then it does the job it was designed! Reflections and spill are kept to a minimum , if you position correctly, with that " dry up close" vox!
