The Beyer DT100 Headphones (400 Ohm)have always been the industry standard choice for one main reason and that is that they are superb. Totally modular, so you can replace any part should you ever need to (remember this is German engineering after all!).

Excellent if you need to make your eardrums meet in the inside of your head and/or exclude extraneous noise but less so for critical or long-term listening. Basically a bit bass heavy with a somewhat recessed top end and they sweat yer lugs. Tough as the proverbial old boots though apart from the cheap 1/4" jack plug that I replaced with a more suitable Neutrik.

DT-100s, still the Industry Standard. Well made, durable, long lasting, good isolation and, most importantly of all, if a piece should break, you can buy all the parts (from Studiospares) to repair them, which is extremely important in a professional environment. These are definitely disgned for foldback monitoring and not for critical listening, so if you're after a pair of headphones for critical listening these are not the ones. However, at foldback they continue to excel. If they're good enough for Abbey Road Studios...

Excellent sound quality - but to be fair I knew this already!

No fancy surround sound or super wide stereo nonsense here. Just a clean, flat sound which is exactly what you need in a loud mixing environment, for PFL and checking reverb levels ect. Great sound isolation too. Not too heavy either for constant use.

Industry standard, but that's just it - standard, and quite expensive with it. Yes, they give good isolation, spare parts are easily available, people think you're a pro because you've got them - but, the sound quality isn't really that special for the money, I would not recommend them for mixing, they can be fatiguing to wear (partly because they are closed back) and the supplied lead isn't that good so I'd recommend buying Studiospares own headphone lead (I went for the 10m one - product code 593300) as it's much better. Their designed use is for those close to a microphone to be able to monitor themselves and the backing track without the microphone picking up what you are listening to - and yes they are good at that, but is it worth paying that much just for the kudos of having DT100s when you can get more modern designs with better sound quality for less money? But the cheaper ones will probably not last as long or be as maintainable as the DT100s. Also make sure you get the higer impedence model - 400 ohms - to make sure they are compatible with pro gear.
