Studiospares S970 Condenser Microphone

This model gets really close to the action. The pre-polarised electret capsule has a tiny diaphragm so is able to capture the harmonics associated with percussion instruments. The upper frequency limit is justbeyond the range of audio measuring equipment. The microphone has little response from other local instruments due to the tight pickup pattern. It simply clips onto the body, bell or rim etc of any instrument. The gooseneck allows precise placement of the capsule. Living next to a snare drum or being clipped to the bell of a saxophone makes great demands on the overload factor. Thankfully the SPL is 136dB, no problem. For any percussive application, this model is difficult to beat whatever the price. Phantom powered from 9 to 52 volts. Maximum drum rim thickness (for clamp) approx. 6mm. Illustrated with the phantom power adaptor and foam windshield.

Microphone Capsule: Condenser
Microphone Response: 100Hz - 21kHz
Microphone Maximum SPL: 136dB
Microphone Connector: XLR
Microphone Pad Switches: None
Microphone Powering: +48 Volts (Phantom Power)
Physical Weight: 0.4kg

This microphone works well for close mic'ing many instruments, but certainly cant cope with snares. I have now tried it on 4 different snares and it distorts way before they're playing at full volume, making it useless for such an application. i haven't tried it on toms yet, but if this is anything to go by, i don't hold much hope for them.

Got this to use on live PA work when needing to mic up trumpet, trombone or sax. Worked fine with no problems - good sensitivity, no noise, great sound and it saves another mic stand which is useful on cramped stages. Only concern is the durability of the thin cable from the pickup to the connector - only time will tell how that stands up.

A great product for the gigging drummer. Very quick to set up in small spaces and excellent for close mic'ing . Good for adding definition in smaller venues, good for drummers who use tom's a lot.

Good powerful little mic. I use it for stage use on tabla & it picks up well, gives a good loud clear signal with minimal pickup of ambient noise.
