SOUND STOPPER ACOUSTIC PANEL Avoiding the problems of sound coming through walls is one huge hassle. Constructing a plasterboard wall a few inches in front of the existing wall and filling the void with Rockwool is the traditional method. That in turn may partially resolve the problem but in turn create many further issues such as builders, cost, disruption, down time etc. Hi Tech industry had licked the problem years ago by applying a sandwich of foam, lead sheeting and foam. The foam attached to the wall acts as a decoupler whilst the sheer density of the lead sheet is an immovable object resisting the movement of air (sound waves) This method far outperforms attaching lead directly to a wall, is simple, not intrusive and costs substantially less. Due to the numerous problems with lead sheet a composite material was developed which has the same density and an identical acoustic resilience as lead. On either side of this composite material is 6mm of a very high density foam. One side is in contact with the wall, the other side exposed to the room. Normal acoustic tiles have a density of around 28 - 40 kg/cubic metre, this foam is 75kg/cubic metre. This combination yields an A weighted transmitted noise reduction of 27dB. Application

Sound stopper finds numerous applications in reducing the amount of sound passing through walls. Typical applications are increasing the sound insulation between rooms and surrounding engines in pleasure craft.

Product Description

Sound stopper consists of a sandwich of a polymer barrier material spaced centrally between two layers of very dense foam. Due to the numerous problems with lead sheet composites, a polymer barrier material was developed which has the same density and identical acoustic resiliance as lead but without the toxic hazards. The foam is non fibrous so is clean and easy to install

Fixing

If the supplied sheet is being used as one piece and glued to wall the sheer weight of the lead substitute will in time cause the sheet to tear itself away from the foam. Gluing is OK but must be supplemented by one of three options.

* Nails (clout nails)
* Screws with large washers under the head
* Stick pin system with non return washer put on it

Supplementary fixings should be placed about every 400mm both horizontally and vertically. That way the lead substitute will not break free.

Health & Safety Considerations

A 2m x 1.2m sheet weighs 16kg so care should be taken in manoeuvring the product in to place.

Fire Hazard

Both materials have class O fire rating which means fire is not an issue in normal surroundings, even in engine compartments.
